The University of Minnesota is proud to present a custom-designed doctor gown tailored exclusively for the University of Minnesota's doctor of philosophy degree holders. The Minnesota Centenary Ph.D. Gown commemorates the first Ph.D. granted by the University in 1888.

This distinctive gown features comfortable maroon Texalure fabric with black velvet chevrons and front panels accented with gold metallic braid. Also available as part of the doctoral apparel is an eight-sided doctoral tam with a gold metallic bullion tassel.

The Minnesota Centenary Ph.D. Gown is available exclusively at the U of M Bookstores and is hand sewn for each graduate.

Over a Century of Doctoral Education

1888 The U of M confers its first Doctor of Philosophy degree to Charles Burke Elliott, future member of the Minnesota Supreme Court and the Supreme Court of the Philippine Islands.

1905 In response to growing enrollment, the University establishes the Graduate School to administer advanced degree programs.

1913 Guy Stanton Ford becomes dean of the Graduate School. Ford's energetic leadership propels the University into the top ranks of international scholarly distinction in the areas of history, science, medicine and agriculture. In his first five years of tenure, graduate enrollment increases by almost 300 percent.

1939 After a long period of enormous growth, the University faces the new problem of unifying its bewildering diversity. Dean Theodore Blegen introduces the revolutionary concept of interdisciplinary programs and research centers. Blegen's ideas spark a renaissance in the social sciences at Minnesota .

1988 The centennial celebration of the University's first doctoral degree acknowledges the great tradition of graduate education at Minnesota. Coinciding with this event, the completion of the University's most successful fund raising effort in history ensures that the tradition will continue in the future.
